Can I go to a doctor that's not my family doctor?

admin June 3rd, 2011

I’m 18 and I suffer from hyperhidrosis, which is a medical condition where you sweat uncontrollably from your armpits. I’ve researched treatments, and botox injections into the armpits seem to be the most effective. (Please don’t try to talk me out of it. I realize botox might not be healthy, but nothing else has worked, and I can’t go through the rest of my life with such an embarrassing condition. I’m tired of trying to hide it and deal with it every moment of every day).

Anyways, my family doctor does not seem very interested in helping me. My mother has left him two messages concerning the problem, and he has yet to contact us.
Would I be able to visit a different family doctor (my friend has one who gave her the injections)? Or do you have to stick with your own?

Senior Citizens, do you find it strange how many people are seeking to eat healthy?

But, will go on a regular basis for botox injections which paralyzes areas of the face? Is this not an oxymoron? Botox, is a poison…and done for the sake of vanity, not a medical issue.
I am specifically speaking about botox usage for vanity sake.
@ Oldman….AMEN!!

Anti Aging Injections?

admin February 23rd, 2011

Hey guys,

Please dont judge me for being curious. I am very young and dont need these injections but I have a huge passion for anti aging dermatology. I was wondering if such a thing existed. I am aware of injectable fillers like Restylane and Collagen. I am also aware of other injections like Botox and Juvederm. But I was wondering if there is vitamins or something like retinols you could inject in the skin to promote ageless, healthy, young skin. For example is their like an injectable moisturizer to penetrate more layers of the skin or is their injectable anti aging ingredients that wouldnt paralyze the muscle or plump the skin but just aid healthy skin. Thanks :)

Is it safe for a person with kidney failure to have botox injections?

admin September 10th, 2010

I realise that botox is still a bit of an ‘unknown quantity’ even where healthy individuals are concerned, but does anyone know if botox injections in the face would affect people with kidney failure any worse than a ‘normal’ person? Can’t find any info about this anywhere….. even ‘askanything’ couldn’t help!

Would you agree that I'm attractive now?

admin June 30th, 2010

Alright, gurls, so I just got my hair, makeup, weave/wig, feet, eyebrows, tummy tuck, and nails done. I also got botox injections, plastic surgery, and a change of clothing.

Am I finally pretty? (And do I finally look like Beyoncé?)

Also, what other advice would you give a black gurl on staying healthy, and pretty?

Thanks!
What exactly are you guys talking about? Can’t a sistah get herself done without it being a conspiracy?

Jeez.
I forgot to include a pic. Silly me!

Can you explain to me this but Shorter.?

admin April 6th, 2010

You can teach an old rat new tricks, if you give him a shot of this stuff.

A form of gene therapy that boosted a protein in aged rats’ brains significantly improved the rats’ performance on memory tests, according to a new study.

The protein — called glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, or GDNF — holds promise as a way to relieve memory and motion control loss that comes with old age and with diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, the researchers report in the September Neurobiology of Aging.

Previous GDNF trials on people with Parkinson’s disease suggested that direct injection of the protein into patients’ brains may have improved verbal memory and motion control. But the new study offers a clearer demonstration that the protein can partially restore age-related memory loss.

“This is a confirmation that this is a really useful molecule,” comments Steven Gill, a consultant neurosurgeon at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, England, who helped run the earlier human GDNF trial. “If we can master those — the neurotrophins, the delivery — then we can tackle these major neurodegenerative diseases.”

GDNF is normally produced in the brain by support cells that surround and nourish nerve cells. The protein stimulates nerve cells, causing them to thrive and to sprout new connections with neighboring neurons. These connections allow neurons to communicate and are believed to be crucial for how the brain stores new memories.

As rats and people reach old age, natural production of this protein appears to taper off, some research suggests. To give elderly but otherwise healthy rats’ brains a boost, a team led by Coral Sanfeliu of the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona, in Spain, loaded a harmless virus with the gene that encodes GDNF. The researchers designed the virus to enter a specific kind of support cell in the brain, called an astrocyte, and insert the gene into the cell’s DNA. Then they injected the engineered virus directly into a memory-forming region of the brain called the hippocampus.

Two weeks after injection, the aged rats’ performance on a standard memory test improved by about 40 percent. That improvement closed half the performance gap between untreated elderly rats and young rats.

Placed in a small pool of water, the rats had to remember the location of a platform hidden just beneath the surface.

“As a proof of principle, it’s a great find,” comments Nik Patel, a consultant neurosurgeon and colleague of Gill’s at Frenchay Hospital.

Using a virus to insert a gene into a person’s DNA is still a risky procedure, Patel cautions. “At the moment I certainly wouldn’t rely on it as fully safe, because there’s always the possibility of [tumors] over the long term.” That’s because inserting a gene can sometimes create cancer-causing mutations in the patient’s DNA.

Scientists are divided over whether viruses or direct injection through conventional catheters will be the more practical way to get GDNF into patients’ brains. But they agree that the protein could eventually provide a new way to treat age- and disease-related mental decline.

“Could this be the Botox of the brain?” Patel asks. “Who knows?”

Thank you!!

I need help solving a mystery illness/diagnosis for my father since the Dr's can't seem to get it.?

admin April 6th, 2010

I know I can’t expect an online diagnosis, but I’m hoping to at least getting some help on where to look next.
History:
He’s an otherwise healthy 58yo white male with no history of allergies or psychiatric illnesses. He’s about 6′, 185lbs, and prior to this mystery was in good health. There’s a history of severe migraines, slightly low blood pressure, and in the last year or so, a constricted prostate causing urinary issues.
Symptoms:
Starting in mid-2005, he started having more severe headaches/migraines that were attributed to stress. These felt different though and did not respond to medications. Over time, the headaches became frequent to the point of being daily and causing hospitilization. CTs, xrays, bloodwork, ekgs, etc, etc show no cancers, infections, swelling, or other physical evidence to explain the situation.
Notes:
Massive antibiotics seem to relive the pain and botox injections in the neck provide 2-6wks of semi-relief.
Any help would be appreciated!

Anyone have any advice to help stop hands from sweating? (even temporarily!)?

admin April 5th, 2010

I’ve gone to so many doctors. And their suggestions have mainly been Drysol or surgery. I’ve tried Drysol and it doesn’t work that well, I still sweat after applying it.
I even went to a specialist today (dermatologist). But he was not very helpful and keep insisting i get a botox injection on my hand to stop the sweating.
I am only 20 so I don’t think getting botox is a good/healthy idea at the moment.
I would really appreciate any tips you may have on making hands stop sweating.
I work in business environment which sometimes requires shaking clients’ hands and I really want to make a good first impression (have tried wiping hands on napkin or pants before shaking hand but it doesnt work that well either ><)
Any tips on temporarily making hands dry for 15 minutes even would be great!!
Thanks so much!
